i've placed the first draft of the Tickertape v3 specification on
DSTC's FTP site for your comments.
ftp://ftp.dstc.edu.au/DSTC/elvin/draft-arnold-ticker-chat-v3-00.txt
in general, this draft reflects the discussion from the ticker
workshop last year, plus commentary from me, and some proposals in
areas where we hadn't reached consensus.
there are several areas that i would like to see clarified before
final publication:
1. security
i'd prefer that we specified a mechanism for secure chat. i'm
happy to leave key exchange out. i think there are two competing
proposals now (aquatik and jinx?)
2. Distribution
Matthew and Martin are keen to have this feature, possibly with
standardised semantics for its values.
3. Replaces
this was contentious at the workshop. i've adopted the mechanism
that uses the Message-Id, and thus allows arbitrary replacement.
this is *less* secure that the current mechanism ...
4. there is currently very little explanatory or motivational text
supporting the raw protocol description. there probably should be,
and it should possibly reference the requirements from rfc2779.
any comments on these issues, or any other aspect of the spec, would
be very welcome ...
procedurally, i plan to hash out the remaining issues in this group,
and then publish a final -00 draft via the IETF RFC Editor as an
Internet Draft. after incorporation of any feedback from that, i'll
submit the revised -01 (or later) draft for publication as an
Informational RFC.
any comments or suggestions about this proposed process are also very
welcome ...
thanks,
d
