[ticker-dev] Ticker logging

Hi all,

just wanting to gauge opinions as to the usefulness of deploying DSTO's web-based ticker logging app on www.tickertape.org. It was originally developed for JWID, but I've since gotten quite used to having it available here as a way to see what I might be missing out on ticker-wise.

It provides an index of known ticker groups linked to a threaded list of messages for each group, usually displayed at 100 messages/page. In order to make it's presence known, the logger appears as a subscriber to each logged group via virtual presence (this also has the nice side-effect of publishing logged groups to new users using presence). It also has a "flat" view suitable for pointing a search engine at: we've sicced our SharePoint portal server on it, which turns out to be pretty nifty (and the key reason it was used in JWID).

Right now I've got it set up to log all chat groups, with the exception of personal groups (ie ones with an "@" in them, slightly bogus I know) and groups ending in ".private", with the option to de-list specific groups on request. News groups aren't logged. The logger is JSP-based (it's built on the Sticker components that receive and store messages) and I don't think it would consume much in the way of resources other than a few MB of disk for the message database.

Any objections, suggestions?

Cheers,

Matthew.
